Now in Session!

Happy "Back to School" season to all who celebrate! We know the school year is incredibly busy, with students delicately balancing their studies, homework, sports and extracurricular activities. Parents seek out activities that will enrich their children's lives, help them develop important skills, and foster a sense of belonging. One activity that stands out for its long list of benefits is joining the school choir! Here’s why you should consider enrolling your child in choir and how it can positively impact their development and overall happiness.

Increased Academic Skills!

Studies have shown that music education, including choir participation, can improve academic performance. Singing requires the use of memory, attention, and critical thinking—all of which are skills that help students achieve academic success. Learning to read music, following a conductor, and staying in time/rhythm also improves a child’s ability to concentrate and process information. The discipline and practice involved in choir can help students develop a strong work ethic that carries over into their studies.

Confidence and Creative Expression!

School can be stressful, and many students look forward to their music class where they're able to let off steam and express themselves creatively. Whether they’re singing a solo or harmonizing with others, each child’s voice matters and plays a role in the group’s overall sound. This sense of unity with a group, and the applause that follows performances, can significantly boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. Plus, learning to stand in front of an audience and perform helps them overcome stage fright, a skill that is useful in many aspects of life.

Strong Team Building Skills!

Choir is the ultimate team activity. Every voice, no matter how big or small, contributes to the choir’s sound. This collective effort teaches children the importance of working together towards a common goal. In choir, they learn to listen to one another, blend their voices, and support each other during rehearsals and performances. This experience of collaboration fosters a sense of community and teaches essential social skills such as patience and cooperation.

A Sense of Belonging!

In choir, every person belongs. From elementary school to college, the "music room" is a safe space where students feel very comfortable being themselves. Plus, the friendships and bonds that develop among choir members is very often one of the most cherished aspects of the experience. Being part of a group where each member is valued and supported can help children feel connected and reduce feelings of isolation. This sense of belonging is especially important during the school years when children are navigating friendships and social dynamics.

Enrolling your child in school choir is more than just giving them an opportunity to sing- it’s about providing them with a space to grow, learn, and thrive. The skills acquired in this setting are invaluable. Plus who knows, maybe you'll also see the start of a lifelong love of music in your child.

We hope all of our students here at VBC have an awesome and fulfilling school year!
