7 New Year's Resolutions for Singers

...that are so easy, you'll actually be able to keep them!

Happy New Year, friends! We at Voice by Chelsea hope you had a fantastic holiday season. Of course, the new year brings a fresh start and a chance to develop some new healthy habits. If you're anything like us, these habits are usually forgotten by January 20th. (Ohhh yeah, I am still paying for that gym membership, huh?) However, we want to kick off your 2024 with 7 voice-conscious resolutions that are so easy you'll be able to keep them until 2025! (And hopefully longer!)

Before you drink your coffee each morning, drink a glass of water.

You know we had to start with hydration! This one is simple, yet effective. While you're waiting for your morning coffee to finish brewing, pour yourself a tall glass of water to start your day. Prioritizing your hydration will set you up for success. You won't regret it!

Challenge yourself to listen to a new artist each month.

One of my favorite things about teaching is being introduced to new music through my students! Many of us get stuck in a rut listening to the same songs and artists we have loved for the last 20 years. So each month, try picking an artist you don't normally gravitate towards and listen to one of their albums. You'll definitely broaden your musical horizons, and you may find some new repertoire in the process!

Incorporate the use of a mirror in your practice sessions.

A mirror can be a singer's best friend. Keep a hand mirror near by when practicing (or during lessons) so that you can become aware of what's happening visually. Things like tongue placement and facial tension can greatly affect your singing.

Take 5 minutes to self reflect.

Take a moment each week to reflect on your singing journey. Identify what you enjoyed, what you learned, and any improvements you've noticed. This short self-reflection session helps you stay mindful of your progress and encourages a positive mindset towards your musical goals.

Add humming into your day.

Whether it's on your drive to work or during your morning shower, start your day with some light humming. Humming is an effortless way to gently engage your vocal cords, improve resonance, and get your voice ready for the day. You can hum your favorite tunes or simply let your vocal vibrations flow naturally.

Practice 15 minutes a day.

That's right- that's all it takes to continue progressing in a steady and healthy way. Ask your teacher if you need help coming up with the most effective routine possible.

Don't compare yourself to others.

This one is always easier said than done, but make 2024 the year of quiet confidence. Celebrate your small victories. Only compare yourself with yourself, and even then, show yourself grace. A lot of factors, like weather, allergies, your amount of sleep and vocal usage can make your voice slightly different from day to day.

Remember, a little each day can go a long way! These resolutions are very quick and simple but will make a big impact, so embrace the New Year with these achievable tasks that promise to elevate your singing skills and enhance your overall vocal well-being.
